Orchid’s father, Tryton the Elf, was an adventurer. He was a Fighter, constantly going wherever the action was, ready to charge into battle. This was a bit of a problem, since he was in an arranged marriage to an Elf named Sula—a Maztican homebody, whose idea of excitement was putting pepper on a scoop of mashed potatoes. Pretty much from the beginning, they agreed to a long-distance relationship. Whether or not they agreed that Tyrton could have an affair is a matter of debate. Nevertheless, while traveling through the outskirts of Waterdeep, Tryton met a Half-Elf named Penelope. He proceeded to met her again and again and again, over the course of five years, resulting in three daughters, Orchid, Leah, and Crystal.
As the oldest, Orchid quickly became responsible for helping to run the household. Penelope’s affair got her kicked out of her family home, forcing her to take whatever works he could get, in order to survive and raise three daughters. This meant long hours at the Waterdeep docks. By the time Orchid was five, Tryton stopped coming around. She always assumed it was because he got bored of his dalliance with Penelope and returned to his proper and regal wife. Maybe this was true, maybe it wasn’t. But Orchid was the one left in charge of tucking her sisters in at night. And her resentment of Tryton quickly blossomed into a deep resentment of all Elves. He abandoned her! Just like her Elf grandfather abandoned her mother. Going back and back and back.
